Working on ecological projects

I'm a small town girl from upstate New York and even though I lived in the country for most of my formative years, the pleasure (and work) of a green thumb eluded me. I came to Ireland on a whim doing a walkabout in Europe and ended up at the Unicorn Foundation by chance. It was one of the best turns of fate I have ever experienced. The Unicorn Foundation took me under their collective wing and showed me a world through their eyes and talents, and when I left them I felt a renewed sense that I sincerely could change my small part of the world.
While I was there, I was able to take part in the gardens, the biodigester, the creation of flow forms, as well as the beginnings of the pond and reed bed. I have never been dirtier and felt more clean. The Unicorn Foundation truly shows that "Work is love made visible."

Learning about ecological issues

The Unicorn Foundation provides an excellent experience to anyone interested in ecological issues. You learn something new every day from a group of knowledgeable and great people who always make you feel welcome. As a WWOOFER, you are well looked after and will go home gaining a lot from your time here. I am currently training as a primary school teacher, and have learned a lot of new and valuable information to teach my future classes.

Sustainable management of the land

This is my second time here with the Unicorn Foundation. I decided to come over again for the summer after having such a great time last year. I have learnt loads from my stay and am hoping to come back again at some point in the near future. The team is friendly and helpful and the environment is great. Learning about sustainable managing of the land is particularly important for the future of the world.

Ecological campaigning

I have been campaigning in the U.S. for the past ten years for NGOs to pass laws to protect the environment and encourage green development. I spent five days at the Foundation as a WWOOFER this summer. Never have I met a more dedicated group committed to achieving a truly sustainable life. I am deeply impressed with their depth and breadth of knowledge, the work they have accomplished, and their plans for the future. They also made me feel welcome and a part of the community despite my short stay.

Forestry inspector

During the course of my work as a forestry inspector I come across many interesting people and places, but I would have to say that what is happening at the Unicorn Ecological Foundation is truly wonderful. The work they have achieved up to now through the development of heat efficient housing, the earthship-style greenhouse, wormeries, reed beds (to absorb nutrients) and the development of woodlands show their dedication, enthusiasm and considerable expertise. Their plans for the future are truly impressive and I sincerely hope they achieve all their goals. As an Irish person I can only applaud their efforts in trying to improve the quality of life in this country.
