Timber frame housing: The story so far
To date, we have built 2 timber frame houses on our site with remarkable success. Our ultimate aim is to have a total of 10 families living on our site as a sustainable community - with timber frame housing the ideal way to accommodate them.
The community that we have built so far is working really well. As well as the timber frame houses we have constructed, we have also renovated the original farmhouse on the site, and everything that we have constructed has been designed with the long term in mind - which includes sturdy design as well as an ongoing minimal impact on the environment
Sustainable living
The waste water from our housing drains into our biodigester, where it is cleansed and returned to the environment as clean water. We power our homes with sustainable energy (which we ultimately hope to be generating entirely ourselves) and use geothermal pumps to heat our timber frame housing. We insulate our buildings well to make them energy efficient, and we do everything we can to keep the amount of power they use to a minimum - down to little touches like making sure doors and windows close snugly and energy-saving lightbulbs are used throughout.
Ecologically sound houses
We love the fact that our housing dispels so many myths about ecologically sound houses - they are cheap to construct and cost very little to run, yet they are sturdy and will last for many generations, and are comfortable and warm. Don't just take our word for it though - why not visit us and see for yourself?
