We have now planted around 70,000  varied trees many of them being native Irish species and others being more unusual, including our "Fossil forest" of Swamp Cypress, Dawn Sequoia and Cedar of Lebanon. With many  thanks to all those  who have donated trees to this project and helped with the planting.

These are the sentiments that very few people today would disagree with, but for the members of the Unicorn Ecological Foundation the quotation has become a mindset and an inspiration.

The Unicorn Foundation was started in November 1991 as an educational charity, by a group of people determined to prove that mankind can live in a sustainable way; still enjoying modern comforts and quality of life, but leading to a future that is in balance with the planet.ferns

We are achieving this by using balanced processes; the methodology of carbon balance and sustainability: processes that enhance the quality of living without detriment to the environment. We are incorporating the very best of traditional techniques, which are still viable in today’s money conscious high speed world, together with modern technology, all of which we hope will prove attainable without overburdening the Earth’s resources.

In the year 2000 The Unicorn Foundation established itself in the hills of West Cork, Ireland where our vision to create this educational example of living comfortably with ecological and sustainable concepts became a reality. Our micro model example of what could also be replicated on a far greater scale began as we built the first of our example dwellings. In 2006 we opened our doors for the first time as a teaching centre and accommodated 31 students at different times throughout the year.

This year, we have had a steady flow of students and volunteers, keen to learn from the foundation by working on the varied projects we have been involved in.

Many other people, from all walks of life, have been shown around our latest house-build project, "Honeycomb", completed in April 2007. They have been given advice on the sustainable building  techniques, heating and insulating technologies and materials that have been used in the building process. The inspiration that it is possible to build a home fast and efficiently, one that is both functional and attractive, a delight to live in and above all,one that does not cost the earth.
